Vacuum leak tests are used to determine the airtight integrity of chambers and piping systems in pre-vacuum autoclave. The test exposes the pipes and components of the Steam Steriliser autoclave to vacuum conditions and measures the extent of vacuum depth loss over a given period of time. Vacuum leak testing is a simple operational inspection that should be incorporated into standard operating procedures wherever a pre-vacuum autoclave is used.

Vacuum leak testing is also known as chamber integrity testing. The vacuum leak test verifies any leaks in the Steam Steriliser Autoclave. Leaks, even small, can have a significant impact on the performance of a part or component or cause equipment failure. Cracks and poor sealing are often the cause of these leaks, but they can usually be detected by vacuum testing the component prior to manufacturing.

Vacuum leak testing is the primary leak test method used to test sealed components that may leak into and into their enclosures from external sources. Key candidates for vacuum leak testing procedures include:

Underwater sensor or housing

Outdoor electrical housing

Packing element

Components associated with the vacuum source

What is the importance of vacuum leak testing?

1. Perform this operation once a day (first period). Vacuum leakage tests should be performed weekly according to guidelines HTM-2010.

2. The vacuum leak test is a critical test as chamber leaks are verified.

Vacuum leakage test Apply vacuum in the chamber and wait for the vacuum to reach the set point.

4. Keep vacuum for 10 minutes after reaching vacuum according to set point.

5. Vacuum after 10 minutes.

6. Calculate the leakage amount according to the formula.

7. Then check whether the leakage in the autoclave chamber is within the limit.

8. If there is any leakage or the leakage exceeds the limit in the Steam steriliser autoclave room, it means that there may be a chance to enter the air in the steriliser room.

9. When vacuum damage occurs, air enters the chamber through the filter located at the unloading side of the autoclave.

10. There is no chance of contamination as sterile air enters the chamber after being filtered through the filter.

While not a sterilization test, a leak rate test can be a good diagnostic tool to give the operator or technician an idea of how the system is performing. This test measures the degree of vacuum depth loss when piping and assemblies are exposed to vacuum conditions. A perfectly sealed chamber has no leakage or threshold of up to 1.0 MMHG per minute for the specified time. Because regular leak rate testing is part of a comprehensive preventive maintenance program, many facilities do not include it as part of a standard daily or weekly testing regimen. Review your departmental SOP to ensure if you need to run this test as an operator, on what schedule, and how to perform the leak rate test or how to obtain the pressure test leak rate. It is important to note that high leakage rates do not indicate sterilization problems. High leakage rates only indicate potential maintenance needs. Vacuum leak rate testing is just one of the leak testing methods we use to ensure the proper operation of highly specialized equipment.
